The digitalization of music became very widespread with the introduction of MPEG-1 Audio Layer 3, commonly known as MP3. It is an encoding format for music storage using lossy data compression, which just means sound beyond most human hearing are eliminated to minimize storage levels. MP3 became the favorite of the time.

Along with the growth of the MP3 came the popularization of personal digital gadgets like the camera, video cameras and organizers. But critics of the MP3 format said it lacked the ‘totality’ or ‘high fidelity’ of music recording and playback present in 33 1 records. Apple Corporation found most MP3 players as unwieldy or small storage capacity and their interface undesirable. This criticism engendered the creation of the device that became the measuring point of audio storage and playback: the iPod. Unveiled in October 23, 2001, the iPod was a “Mac-compatible 5GB HDD of 1,000 songs”.

Apple engineers Tony Fadell, Michael Dhuey and Jonathan Ive conceptualized and created the iPod on the instructions of CEO Steve Jobs and under the aegis of Jon Rubinstein, the engineering chief. The concept for it started when Apple launched iTunes, a Internet program capable of switching CD music to digital form, organize the libraries, play video and radio. Developing a gadget to connect with this, Apple developed and introduced the iPod in a few months later, and followed up its rapid development with numerous models. For capacity, the first iPod can store only a thousand songs with a 5GB disk, but subsequent models, such as the 6th generation iPod Classic, have 160 GB disks. This means one can fully drain the battery two times yet not play all the recorded songs in the iPod, perhaps an overkill, but then who needs? to hear the same song every two hours?

Using an iPod is easy once you know how. Follow the tips in this article and you’ll be uploading music (games, videos, audiobooks, podcasts) like an expert.

1) Load the music files onto your computer

Where are your music files? For a lot of new nano owners the answer is “on my CDs.” If so, you’ll want to make the files available to your computer. Most people start by copying the files from CDs onto the computer’s hard disk. Note: If you use iTunes and have selected “Copy files to iTunes music folder,” it’s enough to just have the CD in your computer’s CD drive.

2) Import the music into your iPod manager

An “iPod manager” handles moving files to and from the iPod. For most of us, Apple’s free iTunes software fills the bill. But, there are other choices if you decide you don’t like iTunes. If you’re new to iPods I suggest you start with iTunes.

It’s important to know that you can download music from any vendor (Amazon, eMusic, etc) and still use iTunes to move files around. You don’t have to buy from the iTunes store unless you want to.

Quick tip: If you want iTunes to put a copy of the file in the main iTunes library directory, choose Edit, Preferences, Advanced from the menu and click the “Copy files to iTunes Music folder when adding to library.” I like to do this to make it easy to find my music files. I know that music files anywhere else on my hard drive aren’t part of the iTunes library and can safely be deleted.

Okay, you’re ready to import the music to iTunes. There’s several ways to import, but the most common is to click (from the top menu) File, Add Folder to Library, and find and select the directory that contains your music. Click the “OK” button to add the music to the library’s music list. You can also use the Control + O keys and select single files to add.

3) Connect your PC and your nano

If your iPod isn’t already connected, get your USB cable (came with your iPod) out and connect the computer and iPod. The left-hand menu should show your iPod when it’s successfully connected.

Now, decide if you want to let iTunes handle synchronizing with your iPod or if you want to handle things manually. I like the “manually manage” approach — it lets me decide which files to move to my nano. It also lets me synch up different computers to just one iPod.

4) Now to upload music to that iPod nano

If you decide to let iTunes manage the uploads, click your iPod’s icon and select “Sync” in the lower right corner.

If you want to manage uploading manually, click your iPod’s icon, select the “Manually manage music and videos” checkbox on the iTunes screen. (Don’t worry, this is a one-time setup step — you won’t have to do it again.) Now all you have to do is select the music (or play lists) you want from your iTunes library and drag it onto the iPod icon.

5) Last step: Eject your iPod before disconnecting

Eject from iTunes by clicking the button at bottom right of the screen. THEN disconnect from your computer.

6) Go find more music

The Apple iPhone is quite expensive and for now, and in the near future the prices will not become affordable quickly enough for everyone to have one. The Chinese iPhone is just another example of how the Chinese have progressed in the consumer electronics. China has, for a long time, been making cheap US type products. Among the different types of these Chinese copies, the CECT P168 bears a very close resemblance to the original iPhone. It takes a very close inspection to realize that it is actually, a Chinese iPhone and not the original.

With this Chinese iPhone, you can use any phone carrier and it also has two Sim slots. It also has more speakers than are found in the original iPhone, and also a removable battery, something that is needed in the original iPhone. Over all, the quality of the product is excellent which is testament to the Chinese being able to produce an item so close to the original model. Only time will tell if it has an effect on the apple version. My best guess is that apple will come out new versions to supercede this version and the Chinese will follow.

The Chinese iPhone is an alternative that should be explored with caution. Due to possible lack of support, and any quality or software issues, may not be easily resolved. The Chinese “copy cat” problem is something that the US and many countries around the world have to deal with, especially if it is done without infringement of trademarks. It’s whether its worth chasing the legal action to solve it or its simply better spend on building the new models which are better than the copies.

Most people agree that when it comes to your iPod the Bose sound dock is the best set of speakers you can find. The only downside of the first iPod soundock is that it has an enormous power supply and A/C cord that limits its use as portable speakers. The new sound dock portable from Bose solves this problem. Its portable speaker system has all of the power and sound quality you’d expect from Bose and it’s portable. This great portable sound and the Bose name comes at a high price…if you pay retail for the speakers you’ll have to fork over $399.

The soundock portable is available in both glossy white and black. It has a very compact design and measures just 12 inches by six inches by 5 inches. The speakers weigh just over five pounds and very closely resemble the original sound dock. There is one distinguishing feature in that the dock your iPod plugs into swivels and can rotate into the unit’s body when traveling.

The Bose sound dock portable shares a simplistic design with the original model and has no physical controls except for the volume controls. The included remote has eight buttons used to operate playback, volume controls, your play lists, and the unit’s power. The remote is small and simplistic; however, its rubberized buttons have a slight lip making them easy to operate by touch. This infrared remote allows you to control your iPod from nearly angle in the room.

There are two connectors on the back of the unit; one analog input and a plug for the power charger. There are no USB ports or video outputs. The speakers are powered by a lithium ion battery pack that holds a charge for up to eight hours of normal usage. At its loudest volume settings the soundock operates for about three hours. The battery holds its charge for a very long time for considering the speakers power and the amount of bass it produces.

The only flaw I can find in the speaker’s design is the sensitivity of the volume controls; however, the included remote functions well enough. The sound dock charges your iPod whenever plugged in; charging the iPod will deplete the soundock’s batteries at a much faster rate. The bass port on the back of the speakers also functions as carrying handle. Bose calls it the unit’s Wave Guide Exit.

There is an LED light behind the speaker grill that flashes with the remote control is used or the lithium-ion battery needs to be charged. If you forget to plug the sound dock into its charger and don’t use it for fourteen days the only way to turn it on is by charging the batteries. Bose did not include any dock inserts for the various iPod models so if you lost yours you can get replacements online or from the Apple store. The speaker’s power cord has a universal cable winder built in that makes it easy for travel. The plug is a tad large though. If you pay retail you’ll shell out $399 for the Bose soundock portable; however price shopping will get you a better deal with free shipping. Bose offers a carrying case; however, if you want one you’ll have to pay $59 more.

Who Needs an Alarm Clock Anymore? My old alarm clock lives in the bottom of my dresser drawer now. It’s been replaced by my iPod nano and a good set of speakers. My nano’s alarm clock does everything I need, and travels with me wherever I go. Here’s how to turn your nano into your alarm clock.

Navigate to the Extras menu and choose Clock > Alarm Clock. Your first step is to make sure the Alarm is toggled on. Next, choose Time and scroll to set when the alarm should ring. Now choose the Repeat menu and decide if the alarm should go off once, daily, weekdays, weekends, once a month, and so forth. Now for the bigger decision: Sound. You will set the iPod to Beep or to a Playlist. Playlist sends the sound through earphones or an external speaker — which is what I use at night. Beep uses iPod’s built-in speaker. Ok, your alarm is set up and ready. Enjoy!

Lulling to Sleep: While we’re in the extras section (and talking about sleep) check out the sleep timer. Use it to select how long you’d like the iPod to play before turning itself off automatically. If you like falling asleep to music or a little background noise this is a great feature.

Setting the Volume limit: Does your iPod seem too loud (or not loud enough)? Head over to the Settings menu and select Volume Limit. Use your clickwheel to adjust your iPod’s maximum volume up or down. You can also adjust the mix of sounds by adjusting the equalizer. It’s listed as EQ in your Settings menu.

If you’re like me, you carry your nano with you most of the day and want a hold that reflects you, your style. On the other hand, if you’re only going to use your 3G nano in an armband at the gym, stop reading now.

The rest of us are carrying our nanos with us in the car, while we’re shopping, and outside in the world. We’re tired of worrying about the nano getting wet, hiding it in our pocket, and just plain feeling overly geeky while walking the blocks to work. Surely there’s a better plan.

Until recently I’d never thought of it as a fashion statement. Two weeks ago I saw my friend’s leather flip case and had an ‘aha’ moment. Time to search for options.

Inexpensive and Okay:

For a quick and inexpensive dress-up, look for a fake (faux) leather flip case. They come in a lot of colors and will protect your nano from scratches.

A small step up is the Kroo Manhattan faux leather. It has red topstitching to make it a little more memorable. Still, not the statement I was looking for when I was shopping.

For a little more style statement consider Cloe Dao’s designs. I like the bright colors she uses on her striped and spotted cases. (The skull and crossbones case I can do without, but edgier types might like it.) The designs are great for weekends but too casual for around my job.

Middle-of-the-Road:

The Sena Pullino case is a great option. It’s a simple design, uses real leather, and has a velvet lining to prevent scratching. The European leather case has a tight fit, which I prefer. I hate worrying about whether the nano will fall out. This case won’t get you style gasps of envy, but you won’t have any reason to be embarrassed about it either.

Pacific Designs and Marware have some good options in this price range too. They both target the multi-purpose case market and make a good product. Again, nothing to get noticed, but will do the job. (Actually, Marware does have a leather flipcase that’s pretty nice if you want something along the “simple but not ostentatious” lines.)

Serious Style:

For an evening look try the Gilty Cotoure 3G nano case. The Swarovski Crystal accents pair with a silver- or gold-plating case. The crystals accents frame the screen and control wheel for an effect that’s suprisingly tasteful. This case runs just slightly less than the cost of an 8GB nano. But then, you weren’t concerned about that anyway were you?

My favorite in this class: the difusi holder with napa leather and snakeskin. It has a magnetic closure and does a nice job of protecting the nano. I don’t use belt clips, but this has one if you want to show it off on your belt. Also a plus: the price is around $40.

If you own the old style (2G) nano, you have some great choices by Coach, Dior, and Prada to review. I was hoping for a Coach case for my new 3G nano, but they don’t seem to have one yet. I’ll look again around Christmas.

What did I decide on? The Difusi holder filled the bill. It’s stylish but still conservative enough for walking to work. I’ll probably buy a Cloe Dao soon to showcase my fun side — we can’t let work run our lives, can we?
